CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Our mission is to produce high caliber theatrical performances in a nurturing, ensemble-based environment that supports each campers individual artistry. Our campers put on fantastic shows, with people they grow to care very much about and respect even more. Every camper is an important piece of the production. We believe in compassion for others and passion for theater.

We offer campers three weeks unplugged, where they can make great theater surrounded by nature, in the beautiful state of Maine. We seek to create an artistic haven for our campers and staff, free of external pressures. Campers at Acting Manitou grow as both people and performers, developing confidence in themselves and important skills of collaboration and communication.

Acting Manitou was founded in 2003 by Tim Brownell and Steve Borowka. At the time, Tim and Steve were both teaching artists working for The McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton, NJ. During the summer, Steve worked as Theater Director for Camp Manitou, a boys sports camp, while Tim split time directing for The Imagination Stage in Washington DC and running Middle Ground Theater, the day camp that he founded in Middlebury, Vermont.

In the summer of 2003, Tim and Steve joined forces to found Acting Manitou and took up residence at the end of the summer at Camp Manitou. During the first summer of operation, the program had 11 campers most of whom came from Vermont. The following summer the program doubled in size to 22, then 30 campers the summer after that. Its fourth summer of operation doubled again to 60 campers and its fifth summer, the last at Camp Manitou, enrolled 80 campers and produced five shows. In the summer of 2008, Acting Manitou took up residence next door to Camp Manitou, at a brand-new performing arts campsite called Camp Eastwood.

In planning the design of the new campsites theater, Tim and Steve created a versatile and intimate thrust stage, capable of putting audience members in close contact with the performers, as well as offering directors a variety of opportunities for flexible staging.

2014 marks Acting Manitous twelfth summer of operation, having produced twelve shows in 2013, with 180 campers and 40 staff. These days, the actors perform for standing room only crowds of family, friends, and local residents of the Waterville community.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Carrying on a tradition of high standards since its founding in 1919, Tapawingo is known as one of the country’s finest private, independent camps for girls.

The value of the camp experience is extremely important at Tapawingo. Next to safety, our primary goal is that each camper return home at the end of the summer feeling better about herself. We know that campers will have tons of fun, learn wonderful skills in their activities, and make lifelong friends. But above all, we know that it is at Tapawingo where they will learn how to be leaders, how to be true friends, and how to be themselves. Tapawingo is a safe place for the development of character and values: judgment, personal responsibility, and independence.

We provide encouragement, encouragement and more encouragement – to assure that each girl develops independence and self-confidence. We do not award trophies for the best athlete or best camper. Any camper may sign up to be on a Tapawingo team; she does not need to try out. We are a cheering and singing kind of place, where a child strives to do her very best.

Tapawingo’s call for fun and adventure is contagious – between 80 and 90 percent of our kids come back to Tapawingo, year after year, and many bring their friends. Tradition is a cornerstone of our camp. Many Tapawingo campers are second-generation campers, and some are third.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: In 1999, I was directing science camps for the Children’s Museum of Maine and had taught science at Scarborough Middle School and Westbrook College and was (and still am) a docent at the Portland Museum of Art. I told my family I wanted to create experiences for children that melded my love of science with my passion for art. My husband replied: “Science and art—sounds like Leonardo DaVinci!” Certified teachers collaborated
with me to develop a science and arts curriculum with theme-based programs and The DaVinci Experience was born!

At DaVinci Experience camps, whether it’s dinosaurs, drawing or building catapults, your children will follow their passions or discover new ones. They’ll make friends with children who may attend their local school or be visiting from another state or country. Campers will find mentors who inspire them to try new things and they’ll have the opportunity to explore new themes each week.

Mature, experienced teachers lead small groups of similar aged campers. Our low camper to staff ratio allows your children to fully participate in hands-on science activities, art projects and outdoor games. Their experiences are enriched by meeting guests from the community, as diverse as doctors and veterinarians to dancers and African drummers.

At DaVinci Experience we are building an inclusive community of learners and we would love to have your family join us!

Judy Crosby
Founder and Director
DaVinci Experience

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Tripp Lake Camp is a traditional, residential girls camp. Our unique summer program is designed to grow with each camper. In seven weeks girls will learn new activities and become part of our rich tradition.

We have a diverse program that focuses on creating a well rounded camper. Whether performing in the theatre, playing sports, scaling a climbing wall, or water-skiing for the first time, there are activities for every camper to enjoy. Our daily schedule allows campers to experience all aspects of camp. Campers select many activities while still having certain activities that the entire age group attends; such as Swim, Tennis or Team Practices and Team Games.
