CAMP PROGRAM INFO: MUSIC ACADEMY
The Music Academy program offers an all-inclusive intensive musical experience for intermediate/advanced students ages 12 and up. Each student will receive weekly private lessons, chamber music coachings, and have an opportunity to participate in technique/orchestra audition classes and masterclasses held by our faculty. Students will have designated individual practice time as well as student-run group rehearsal time to ensure the most progress is made throughout the program.
Throughout the two weeks, each student group will be learning a new work, covering topics such as ensemble building skills, interpersonal communication skills, rehearsal and practice techniques, meaningful and successful expression of ideas, understanding the uniqueness of individual parts, leadership within the ensemble, stylistic integrity, performance and connecting with your audience, among others. Students will have the opportunity to showcase their progress in two student performances at Black Hills State University's Meier Hall where all parents, friends, and the community are invited to attend.
PERFORMANCE PROGRAM
The Violin/Viola/Cello Performance Programs are open to students ages 8-12 at the beginner and early intermediate level. Through this program, students will improve their musical ability on their instruments, learn effective methods of practicing and collaboration with others in a group setting, and most importantly, meet new friends in a nurturing, fun, learning environment. As faculty at Rushmore Music Festival, we hope that after having participated in the Performance Program, each student will leave with a higher proficiency on their instrument as well as a more thorough, creative way of listening to and understanding music, and the ability to communicate expressively and effectively. Students will receive a daily class in technique, music theory, and eurhythmics, as well as participate in masterclass-style lessons, group classes, and creative listening activities. A final student performance will be held on the last day of the program where all students will have an opportunity to perform their prepared solo and group selections.
COMPOSITION FELLOWSHIP
Rushmore Music Festival's Composition Fellowship is an intensive two-week program intended for students ages 13 and up who have an interest in composition. Although some prior composition experience is necessary, this program is suitable for both beginning and advanced composers. Directed by Nathan Hudson, Composition Fellowship students will learn about important topics for modern composers:
• how to begin a new work
• collaborate and rehearse with an ensemble
• work while on a schedule
• engraving considerations in the music
• practical considerations for the professional composer
Each student will receive private instruction as well as daily presentations and discussions on current, relevant issues in composition. There will be open time every afternoon for rehearsal with fellow students and faculty members on their pieces — composed before or during the program.
Throughout the two weeks, students will be actively listening and thinking about current music across the world. Students will have the opportunity to showcase their work during the festival with performances at Black Hills State University's Meier Hall (which will be recorded for the students), where all parents, friends, and the community are invited to attend.
